Exemplary sinking operation of the P.P. Tugboat “Nestor” by the Hellenic Navy

With complete success and operational accuracy, the sinking of the decommissioned tugboat “Nestor” was completed on the designated seabed of the Diving Park of the Municipality of Apokoronas, in the marine area of Ombros Gialos, in the Municipal Community of Kefalas. The operation, carried out by the Underwater Demolition Team (UDT) of the Hellenic Navy, was conducted with meticulous preparation, absolute consistency, and full compliance with safety and environmental protection protocols.

The planning and execution of the ship’s sinking aimed primarily at ensuring the protection of the marine ecosystem and avoiding any potential environmental disturbance. As confirmed during the immediate inspection following the sinking, as well as the next day, the process was completed without any negative impact on the environment and marine life, confirming the excellent planning and exemplary execution of the mission.

A key element of the operation was the thoroughly studied management of the shock wave by the team, which was dissipated within the ship’s structure and directed towards the surface through its funnels, preventing the spread of pressure in the marine environment and ensuring the absolute stability of the procedure.

The success of this operation is a tangible demonstration of the operational excellence, high professionalism, and dedication of the members of the Hellenic Navy’s Underwater Demolition Team. The precision with which every stage of the mission was executed, the discipline, technical expertise, and excellent cooperation between the involved parties highlight the top operational readiness of the Hellenic Navy, which continues to be the guardian of the safety and protection of our country’s marine environment.
