Already operating, the National Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern Sporades was the first marine park established in Greece and is currently the largest marine protected area in Europe.

Under recent changes regarding the relevant legislation three more marine parks are expected to be fully operational by the summer of 2014:

  • One close to Methoni in the Peloponese that hosts  the world known ancient wrecks with the columns from the temple of Irodes and the sculptured sarcophagus of Troia
  • One close to the bay of Navarino that hosts the wreck of Irene Serenade from 1978 one of the largest accessible wrecks in the world
  • One in Ancient Sikiona in Korinth, which was one of the most important cities of the ancient world
